Stop the Romance

Ahhhh Valentines Day - the day of love, chocolates, flowers, stuffed animals, candle lit dinners! Excuse me while I reach for the bin to vomit! While most of the world celebrates this day of nauseating love - there are some of us who have more sense and ignore the day completely! It is a corny, over commercialized day of forced sentimentalism. Isn't love supposed to be a continuous and unconditional feeling that we embrace every day of the year?

And what happens when you're single on Valentines Day? I tell you what - you feel like a total loser! I have had many years in which Valentines Day has arrived - I wake up running to check my emails all day to see if perhaps maybe someone has sent me a little love note. Nothing. I watch all day as girls receive expensive bunches of roses, chocolates, teddies and me... Nothing! At the end of the day, as I come home alone, I put on Bridget Jones's Diary and wallow in the fact that I am single and nobody loves me! Do you see, this is what Valentines Day does to singles the world over?

The people I really feel sorry for on Valentines Day are the blokes. For some reason, society has made the day all about the women and the burden lies on the men to make it special. If you don't buy your partner anything, wow you're in trouble and you sleep on the couch for the night. But then if you buy her something and it's not right, well better get use to that couch! See you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't!

What really annoys me though is that the romantic gestures are not returned. Women just assume that the day is all about them and that there is no need to show their affection back! As much as I disagree with it, it's Valentines Day ladies - it's about the person you love and how you show them your love! So if this means you give them some lovin' in return - great, at least the blokes are getting something! Valentines Day is not important - far from it in fact.

We've heard it all before but Valentines Day should be everyday! If you really love someone, show them a small romantic gesture every day. That will have more impact than wasting your money and buying over priced crap for just one day. And if you're single and admire someone, why wait until Valentines Day. Tell them today - life's short and if you don't ask you don't get! If you are really the true romantic, then forget Valentines Day - show the love everyday!
